Here we are: the start of a new football season.
Yes, indeed, folks, don’t be confused — Super Bowl LIV took place Sunday, and the Chiefs are world champions! Yet football is still going.
The XFL, the Extreme Football League, owned by WWE, will be gracing our televisions. Dear readers you might have known about the XFL of old. But we are in a new age with new talent and new teams.
The experiment begins Saturday. The teams to root on this season are as follows: from Manhattan, the NY Guardians; reigning in the rainy city, the Seattle Dragons; and from our nation’s biggest state we have two teams — the Dallas Renegades and the Houston Roughnecks.
Representing the sunshine state are the Tampa Bay Vipers. Shining from Hollywood we have the Los Angeles Wildcats. Downstream from the River City, the St. Louis Battle Hawks, and finally hailing from our nation’s capital we have my personal favorite and the team I will be rooting for this season, the DC Defenders. The DC club has a local connection, as the roster includes Gannon alumnus Tyler Palka, who played for the Knights in 2016 and 2017.
The XFL will also bring innovation to the game including a brand-new kickoff, rule changes for punting, a double forward pass, changes to overtime and the most interesting — a brand new extra point. After a touchdown, the team has the option of running a play from the 2-, 5- or 10-yard line, worth one, two or three points, respectively.
The team must run an offensive play and no kicking plays are allowed. This will certainly change the game and bring more excitement. I am pumped for this league and can’t wait cheer on my DC Defenders.
Anyways folks have a good week and as always,
GO KNIGHTS!
