Award season is coming to a close Sunday with the airing of The 91st Academy Awards at 8 p.m.
It’s been a rocky road getting to this point, but it looks like everything is going to work out just fine in the end.
We’ll all just have to wait until the big night to know for sure, though, because if there’s anything that we know about the Oscars, anything could go wrong at any time.
Trying to stay positive, I’ve dedicated this space to a preview of what awards are going to be given out.
Starting with Best Actor in a Supporting Role, the nominees are Mahershala Ali for “Green Book,” Adam Driver for “BlacKkKlansman,” Sam Elliott for “A Star is Born,” Richard E. Grant for “Can You Ever Forgive Me” and Sam Rockwell from “Vice.”
The nominees for Best Actress in a Supporting Role are Amy Adams for “Vice,” Marina de Tavira for “Roma,” Regina King for “If Beale Street Could Talk” and Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz from “The Favourite.”
The nominees for Best Actress in a Leading Role are Yalitza Aparicio for “Roma,” Glenn Close for “The Wife,” Olivia Colman from “The Favourite,” Lady Gaga for “A Star Is Born” and Melissa McCarthy for “Can You Ever Forgive Me.”
The nominees for Best Actor in a Leading Role are Christian Bale for “Vice,” Bradley Cooper for “A Star Is Born,” Willem Dafoe for “At Eternity’s Gate,” Rami Malek for “Bohemian Rhapsody” and Viggo Mortensen for “Green Book.”
The nominees for Best Animated Feature Film are “Incredibles 2,” “Isle of Dogs,” “Mirai,” “Ralph Breaks the Internet” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse.”
Finally, the nominees for Best Picture are “Black Panther,” “BlacKkKlansman,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “The Favourite,” “The Green Book,” “Roma,” “A Star Is Born” and “Vice.”
Like most people, there are a good amount of movies on this list that I have not seen.
With that in mind, I have seen a few of these movies, and I have a few predictions.
For Best Actress in a Leading Role, I have to give my endorsement to Gaga in “A Star is Born.” The world already knew that she had an amazing voice, but “A Star is Born” solidified Gaga’s acting chops.
For Best Actor in a Leading Role, I really want Bale to win. This was a tough call for me, as Malek did an excellent job portraying the late Freddie Mercury, but Bale’s performance as Dick Cheney was really impressive.
While I am pretty sure that Malek is going to win, I would love to see Bale take home an Oscar, not only becuase of his performance, but the transformation he put his body through to get ready for the role.
The only Best Animated Feature Film that I think should win is “Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse.” It was a compelling story that was told in such a creative way that I would find it very surprising if anything else won.
Of the nominations for Best Picture, I really don’t have a preference for what should win, just as long as it’s not “Black Panther.” The media has hyped up that movie to religious levels, and I didn’t really think it was that great. If I had to venture a guess, I would say that “Bohemian Rhapsody” takes home the Oscar.
This has been an excellent year for film in general, and I look forward to seeing who will take home the little statuettes Sunday night.I encourage the rest of you to do the same.
