The Gannon University women’s soccer team had an eventful week, taking on both Edinboro and Kutztown, the third-ranked team in NCAA Division II.
In Wednesday’s PSAC matchup at McConnell Family Stadium, Edinboro tried to get revenge from last season when Gannon scored in overtime to advance in the PSAC playoffs, but the Knights rallied for a 3-1 victory.
Gannon’s modest win streak would end at two games Saturday when Kutztown claimed a 4-0 shutout win on its home field.
In the first of those games, Edinboro started the scoring with a goal by Ashley Mutkus, who deflected a pass from Rebecca Manns past Gannon goalkeeper Danitza Indacochea in the 13th minute of play.
The Knights would rebound to score the next three goals in the game. Taylor Lewis started the scoring on a shot from 15 yards out in the 16th minute of play.
Megan McCartney snapped the tie roughly 25 minutes later as she converted a pass from Sarah Kaiser to make it 2-1.
Kayla Bevacqua added Gannon’s third goal in the 67th minute of play as she deposited a shot from 30 yards out on the right side.
After giving up nine shots in the first half, the Knights allowed only three shots on goal in the second half, which helped seal the victory.
Gannon’s offense came alive in the final half as the Knights unloaded eight shots to finish with a 14-12 edge overall.
In Saturday’s game, Kutztown put together a team effort in defeating the Knights.
Maddie Mohr opened the scoring for the Bears just three minutes into the game, and five minutes later, Emily Zwiercan scored the first of her three goals to make it 2-0.
Zwiercan added her fourth and fifth goals of the season in the second half to close out the scoring.
Kutztown finished with 18 shots to 12 for Gannon, which dropped to 2-1 overall and 2-1 in PSAC play. Lewis, who led Gannon in scoring a year ago, had four of her team’s shots.
The Knights hit the road again Wednesday, taking on the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown in a 4 p.m. match.
Gannon returns home to host Bloomsburg at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at McConnell Family Stadium.
