Well, I guess a big “welcome back” is in order to anyone reading this.
I hope everyone had a restful spring break and that you are all ready for another long stretch of work before our Easter break.
For anyone who may be curious, that is only 37 days away. And yes, I am already counting down.
I feel as though we are at the point in the semester where things may be starting to build up into the huge explosion of finals week, but no one really wants to talk about that yet, do they?
We just had our first of two breaks this semester, and I will be the first to admit that I did not use my time over break to do anything that could even almost be categorized as productive. Relaxing and peaceful, maybe, but nothing compared to what other students may have done.
For example, I know a handful of students who attended the various ABSTs that were offered this year.
I know of students who went to Mexico and Guatemala while I traveled between Pittsburgh and Sharon for the past week.
I am not going to sit here and lie; I struggled with what I would write about this week for my column because I felt as though I did not have any interesting experiences over my spring break that would have been worth sharing.
I try to be sure that my column have some sort of small message, but this week I could not seem to think of anything for a long time.
After a while, it occurred to me that I did have one, seemingly meaningless, experience while I was home.
On the last night that I would spend in Pittsburgh with my family, we all took a trip to our local ice skating rink. I know it sounds silly, but my family does not do that kind of thing all the time.
It is not often that we are all in the same place at the same time.
With my father working and me at school, it is difficult to get us all together for a night out.
I think that is why this particular night meant so much to me.
Being included in family outings was something that I was worried I would lose as soon as I went off to college, but this night helped to ease that worry.
So maybe my spring break trip did not include any “real” traveling or new, life-changing experiences, but it did include a night of relaxation and fun that was very much needed.
I encourage those who did attend the incredible trips to take time to reflect on your experiences and look forward to time with your families over our next break.
