It’s Gannon’s turn to host the Sixth Annual Rivals Linked by Pink 5K Run/1 mile Walk to help raise money and awareness for breast cancer research.
The race will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Recreation and Wellness Center. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. and is $20 per participant. While supplies last, T-shirts will be given at the time of registration.
This event is made possible by Gannon’s doctor of physical therpay program and Mercyhurst University’s sports medicine department. The rival universities have united as one for their sixth year to sponsor the event to help the local ogranization Linked by Pink.
Linked by Pink is a local organization that supports those who have been affected by breast cancer or know someone who has. All proceeds from the race will go to the organization to promote awareness about breast cancer research and treatment.
There will also be a dedication wall for participants to show who they are running or walking for. In addition, awards will be given to the top three male and female runners of the 5K.
According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. It is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women.
Each year, more than 250,000 women are estimated to be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 die. For men, it is estimated that over 2,350 will be diagnosed and 440 will die, according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
Breast cancer is a global burden that has impacted millions of lives worldwide. Whether being personally impacted or impacted by a family member – it affects us all. Get Linked by Pink Saturday.
