When I was a little kid my favorite part of coming home after school was being able to watch “Full House” before supper. It was a routine of mine. I would come home, play outside for one or two hours and then come inside, wash up and get ready for my favorite shows.
It always started with “Full House.” I remember singing along to the theme song – quietly to myself – and then sitting in my pink fuzzy chair in front of the TV.
“Full House” was a very popular show when I was growing up, and it makes me extremely excited that a remake of it is being released by Netflix on Friday. Unfortunately for me, I will be on a bus headed to Georgia with my team, but it gives me something to look forward to when I get back.
There would always be a life lesson in every “Full House” episode. When I was younger I thought these lessons had the deepest and most significant impact on my life. But, I have been rewatching the episodes on Netflix and the lessons are very obvious and slightly cheesy.
Then again, I am 22 and not under the age of 10 so the lessons hold a different value to me now. Nevertheless, the show is still one of my all-time favorites from when I was a youngster. I was around the same age as one of the main characters, Stephanie, while the show was in reruns.
The show lasted for eight seasons from 1987 to 1995. I was just barely 1 year old when the final episode aired so I never had the chance to experience the show during the original airing. But, by the time I was old enough to actually comprehend what I was watching, it began to have reruns.
When I was younger my parents could hardly get me to 1) stop moving 2) stop talking and 3) sit still long enough for them to breathe, but for some reason I could sit and watch an episode of “Full House” no problem.
I thought that show was the best thing since sliced bread. It made it to the No.1 spot for my top five favorite shows of that time period. I wasn’t really into the average children’s shows; I wanted something with a little more substance.
My favorite shows to watch after school were– in ranking order – “Full House,” “Home Improvement,” “Boy Meets World,” ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and “Saved by the Bell.” My family would sit together and watch the majority of these shows together, as long as we didn’t have hockey.
Times were simpler then. I didn’t have to worry about finding a job, paying off school loans, paying rent, doing mass amounts of homework, making sure the paper actually gets printed or finding time to sleep. I could take the time to enjoy watching TV after school before hockey or supper and not regret the decision of turning a show on.
I think that is why I am so excited for “Fuller House” to begin on Friday – it will bring me back to my childhood for a brief period of time and maybe help me calm down. For anyone who knows me, calming down and taking a chill pill is something that is highly recommended to me on a regular basis.
Thank you, Netflix, for filling my prescription with a much-needed ’90s throwback.
