Erie, PA. — Gannon University’s tagline is “Believe in the Possibilities,” a statement I find fitting for the institution that has given me countless opportunities to experience what the world has to offer. As a fourth-year student, I’ve visited New York City three times with 90.5 WERG, the student-run radio station; traveled to Yellowstone National Park with the Ropskis for the Ecology in Yellowstone GIFT Course; experienced the Navajo Nation in Tuba City, Arizona through an Alternative Break Service Trip (ABST); completed the Disney College Program (DCP); and much more. Each of these experiences have taught me valuable life lessons and given me unforgettable memories from my time at Gannon University, but the question is: are these experiences worth the financial cost?
The short and sweet answer is “yes, of course,” but let me explain to you why these trips are worth every penny.
First and foremost, many of these trips are tailored specifically to your education and interests. These are unique trips planned by Gannon faculty and staff based on their own adventures at these destinations, or through outside organizations that work with higher education institutions to coordinate these trips. When I went to Yellowstone National Park, the entire trip was planned by Dr. and Mrs. Ropski, who are two Yellowstone experts. They took us to all the places where they knew we would see the best wildlife, hike the best trails, try the best food, and create special memories. I have been to Yellowstone two other times with my family prior to this trip, and the GIFT course with the Ropskis was out-of-this-world compared to my family’s trips.
Similarly, my ABST to the Navajo Nation in Tuba City, Arizona was one of the most unique, transformative trips I’ve taken. We spent the entire week learning about the Navajos, immersing in their culture, and providing service to their community. I made new friends, gained valuable knowledge, and returned to Pennsylvania inspired. Although I have only participated in the Navajo Nation ABST, I have heard similar accounts from acquaintances who have participated in other ABSTs. One of the advantages of these trips are the ranges in trip costs, as well as the scholarships provided to students who apply, and fundraisers hosted by each group. At first, the cost may seem intimidating, but the Center for Social Concerns has plenty of resources available to students to provide financial assistance.
The other opportunities I have immersed myself in during my time at Gannon were just as beneficial as the GIFT course and ABST. I tell my peers how lucky we are to attend a university that values hands-on experiences as much as our classroom education. There is endless encouragement to explore the world from Gannon University, and the possibilities are right at your fingerprints. My biggest piece of advice to give to any student is take advantage of what is offered to you, and it may be the best thing you have ever accomplished.
