Gannon women’s cross country finishes in 5th; men finish 6th

The Gannon University women’s and men’s cross country teams both competed at the Paul Short Invitational Saturday in Bethlehem, Pa., with the women finishing fifth among 43 teams and the men posting a sixth-place finish among 36 entrants.
Senior Grace McGrath led the Knights, finishing ninth overall in the 6K race in 23 minutes, 25 seconds.
Meredith Morise finished 14th in 23:41, Sarah Fiorello 54th (24:49), Alena Wisniewski 60th (25:00), Taylor Roberts 104th (25:35), Allie Domer 132nd (25:53) and Tori Panian 133rd (25:55).
This race was the largest of the Knights’
season with 357 runners competing.
Haverford won the event with 73 points, followed by Eastern (189), Clarion (199), East Stroudsburg (230) and Gannon (241).
Kendall Fitzgerald of Post University took first place, running the race in 22:43. Abigail Dalton from Muhlenberg placed second in 22:43, followed by Veronica Kordrupel of Buffalo State in 23:04.
The Gannon women now have five top-5 finishes in five meets this season.
The women will return to action at their only home race of the season Saturday at the Gannon/Mercyhurst Invitational, held at Pleasant Ridge Park in Fairview.
The men’s team was led to its sixth-place finish by sophomore Joseph Westrick, who finished second overall in the 8K event with a time of 26:01.
That was Westrick’s third top-3 finish of the season.
Gannon runners Eric Ingram finished 38th in 27:27, Ryan Garich 45th (27:35), Kyle Martin 84th (28:24), Garrett Sutton 97th (28:44), Brett Whitty 129th (29:26) and Mitchel Daubert 169th (30:31). Noah Simatei from NYIT won the event with a time of 25:54. Westrick edged third-place finisher Josh Duffie of Geneva by four seconds.
The top five teams of the match were Ramapo with 105 points, Swarthmore with 121, Coast Guard with 127, Cortland State with 132 and Muhlenberg with 243.
Following suit with the women’s team, the men’s team will be hosting the Gannon/Mercyhurst invitational at Pleasant Ridge Park on Saturday.
