The Gannon University women’s golf team, led by medalist Manuela Quevedo, continued its hot play as it rallied to defeat Franklin Pierce by five strokes and win the Battle at the Bay in Rising Sun, Md., Monday.
It marked the Knights’ sixth first-place finish in seven starts this season. The team finished with an overall score of 654 at the two-day event, which featured 13 teams and was played at the Chesapeake Bay Golf Club.
Five Gannon golfers placed in the top 20, led by the junior Quevedo, who opened with a round of 75 and finished with an 83 to post a two-day score of 158.
Quevedo edged Franklin Pierce’s Sarah Daley and Millersville’s Danielle Green, who tied for second at 159.
This marks Quevedo’s second tournament win of the season; she also won the Le Moyne Fall Invitational in September.
Quevedo has finished among the top 10 five times and within the top five three times this season.
Senior Diana Munoz also made a showing as she placed sixth with a score of 163. It was the seventh straight top-10 finish for Munoz this season.
Following Munoz was Carley Sawyer, who placed 10th at 165. Her final-round 77 was the Knights’ top second-round score.
Next came sophomore Rebecca Red Horse, who placed 13th with a combined score of 168.
Five steps behind Red Horse was another sophomore, Julia Santo, who placed 18th at 171.
The next time the Knights will hit the links will be Sunday at the Ohio Dominican Invitational in Columbus, Ohio.
The one-day tournament will be played at the Jefferson Country Club.
After that Gannon will be in a PSAC battle as it travels to West Chester University for a two-day matchup starting April 9.
