The Gannon University women’s lacrosse team snapped a two-game losing streak by beating Slippery Rock, 14-11, Tuesday at McConnell Family Stadium.
With the win, the Knights improved to 6-8 overall and 4-6 in the PSAC heading into Saturday’s matchup on the road against Lock Haven. Gannon will follow that with a trip to Edinboro on April 20.
Leilani King and Kierstyn Haight each scored five goals in the win over Slippery Rock. Ashley Mozingo added two while Tessa Mitchell and Yohana Romero each added one.
On April 6, the Knights traveled to Greensburg and suffered a tough 12-11 loss to Seton Hill.
The game started off completely in the Knights’ favor as they scored the first four goals unanswered.
Mozingo was able to get the hat trick in just a little over eight minutes. By the end of the first period the Knights held a seemingly comfortable 8-1 lead over the Griffins.
But the team was not able to put up that same performance in the second half, giving up the lead and ending up on the short end of the 12-11 score.
This game came with some fantastic achievement from King. Only a sophomore, King netted her 100th point and going into Tuesday’s game against Slippery Rock, she had tallied 24 goals and 16 assists for 40 points.
On Monday, the Knights squared off in another close battle, this time against Bloomsburg. The home match was evenly split until the last 10 minutes, when the Huskies scored three straight goals to turn a 10-10 tie into a 13-10 lead.
The day did have a spectacular show of skill by Mitchell, who put up seven goals and two assists. The career-high nine-point total enabled her to land a spot on Gannon’s all-time top 20 in goals.
Following the road matchups at Lock Haven and Edinboro, the Knights will return home April 23 against Millersville in the final regular-season game.
